How to Set Up Windows Sandbox in Windows 10

Microsoft is adding new and exciting features to Windows 10. They do not always work. On the arrival of many people are given a splendid welcome. However, the introduction of the Windows Sandbox environment for Windows 10 began with significant interest.

Previously, you could create sandboxes in Windows 10 using only third-party tools. Having an integrated device is potentially easier and safer than alternatives.
Here's how you can set up Windows Sandbox on Windows 10.

What is Windows Sandbox?

Windows Sandbox is a temporary virtual desktop environment. While the Windows sandbox is running, you are essentially running a clean version of your operating system, in which your activities do not affect the rest of your machine.

The Windows Sandbox, then, is a secure environment where you can test any software before installing it on your main device.

How does windows sandbox work?

Microsoft uses many tools to bring the Windows sandbox to life.

Dynamic Image Creation. The Windows Sandbox copies an image of your existing operating system to a virtual machine. Your Windows sandbox environment always uses a fresh, clean Windows 10 installation with fresh updates. But you do not have to store an additional copy of the operating system to work with other virtualization software.
Smart Memory Management. Virtual machines can be quite resource-heavy and require a host machine to share their hardware. The Windows sandbox uses smart memory management to dynamically allocate memory between the host and the sandbox, ensuring that the host is not slow to crawl.
Snapshot and clone. Windows uses two common virtualization technologies, called sandbox, snapshot and clone, to reduce the load on the host system. The snapshot allows the Windows sandbox to boot the environment once, then "preserve memory, CPU, and device state on disk." From here, the environment can restore it from disk instead of booting every time. Sandbox is required.

Windows Sandbox also uses improved graphics virtualization to experience mirroring mirrors to the sandbox environment.

Can I run the windows sandbox?

The Windows Sandbox is currently available for Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise installations, producing Insider Previews, 18305 or later, or Windows 10 May 2019 update or later. Unfortunately, Windows 10 Home users will not have access to the Windows sandbox.

You will also need:

  • 64-bit processor
  • Virtualization switched to your system BIOS
  • Minimum 4GB RAM (Microsoft recommends 8GB)
  • At least 1GB of free disk space (Microsoft recommends using SSDs)
  • At least 2 CPU cores (Microsoft recommends four cores with hyperthreading)

How to check if virtualization is on

Before going into your BIOS to turn on virtualization, there is a quick check that you can see if it is already activated.

Type the task in your start menu search bar and select the best match. Open the Task Manager, Performance tab. This will list either virtualization as well as enable or disable.

If virtualization is disabled, you need to head the BIOS and switch it. Follow Ben Stegner's handy guide to learn how to switch to virtualization.

Once it started, restart, and continue.

How to switch to Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox Feature

Okay, now you need to check that Microsoft Hyper-V is up and running. Hyper-V is a Windows Server virtualization tool built into Windows. In this case, Hyper-V is used to create the Windows sandbox, so you must switch it before proceeding.

How to access windows sandbox

Windows restarts, Open Start Menu search bar, and Type Windows Sandbox. Windows Sandbox will appear as the best match. Open Windows Sandbox; take this!
Whenever you open it, the Windows Sandbox opens a clean version of your current Windows version. It is always up to date, with the same system update as the host.

Running windows sandbox inside the virtual machine

If you are trying to use the Windows sandbox in a virtual machine, then an additional step has to be taken. You must set up your system to allow nested virtualization. It is a virtual environment running within a virtual machine.

In the virtual machine, type powers in your Start menu search bar, right-click Best Match and choose Run as administrator.

Now, input the following command:

Set-VMProcessor -VMName <VMName> -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $ true

Swapping <VMName> for the name of the virtual machine.

Restart your virtual machine. After the restart, the Windows Sandbox option should be available in your Start menu.

Running Windows Sandbox on Windows 10 Home

I know that I said that Windows Sandbox cannot run on Windows 10 Home. This is true; Out of the box, you can't. But a patch developed by the DeskModer team allows Windows 10 Home users to spin the Windows sandbox.

Now, I did not get a chance to try this patch. The results appear mixed and introducing the Windows sandbox into your system via patches can have unintended consequences. If you want to try out the Windows Sandbox on your Windows 10 home system, then do a system backup before doing so.
